1⃣️ 学个地道表达：plumb the depths of sth（plumb 探索；钻研；探究） 我的记忆方法很现实「不要钻牛角尖，不要探究原因，这会让你越发痛苦，最后陷入痛苦绝望的深渊」。
2⃣️ stifle 在所有表示“遏制、扼杀”的词汇中比较特殊，表示对于“美好事物的遏制”(stifle something you consider to be good)
此外，还可以是“遏制冲动”：I tried to stifle the impulse to go to the drawer of the kitchen table and get aknife and defend myself. 我当时真想从抽屉里拿把菜刀进行自卫，然而我却竭尽全力抑制住了这种冲动。 或者“控制自己的愤怒”(stifle one’s indignation)。
3⃣️ 我觉得shrivel很生动，意思为“（使）枯萎，干枯，皱缩”。这里指如火如荼revolution渐渐凋零，只沦落为没新意的pastiche（模仿作品）。
希望枯萎shrivel就是失望：
Two years on, those hopes have shrivelled.
两年后，民众对执政联盟越来越失望。
