neck and neck尤指选举中「并驾齐驱，难分高低」
是从赛马比赛当中产生的，neck 指的是马头，在一些非常接近的比赛里面，裁判判断胜负的标准就是谁的马头在前。

put the last touches to本意是做最后的润色，还可用finishing去代替last：
I spent the morning putting the finishing touches to the report.
我花了一个上午为这个报告做最后的润色。
这里的touch是可数名词，意思是「a small detail that is added to sth in order to improve it or make it complete」，翻译为“修饰；润色；装点”。所以，这里其实就是对最后的装饰进行修缮。

We discussed it all morning but got nowhere.
