A court in Athens has ordered the Greek government to compensate a family €300,000 after finding a direct causal link between the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and a woman’s death.
The court rejected the government’s argument that the vaccination was purely “voluntary” and therefore the state had no liability. Instead, judges ruled that because the vaccination campaign was part of a national public health policy, the state bears responsibility when clear evidence shows a cause-and-effect relationship.
This decision (from the Administrative Court of First Instance in Athens) could open the door for similar claims in Greece if families can prove the link medically.
